PICTURESON STRAVINSKY
Gisela Rocha with Introdans
Gisela Rocha‘s production for the Dutch ballet company Introdans saw its premiere within the programme «StRAWINSKI SWINGT» in Arnhem/NL in 19 September 2008 – In 2006 Gisela Rocha became a ‘New Partner’ of Introdans. In collaboration with the Introdans dancers she created the world premiere Paradise ? in 2006. This ballet was a major success and she was invited to make a new work for the VUUR&VLAM programme in 2007, entitled Disclose. In 2008 the successful partnership between Introdans and Gisela Rocha is being continued with a world premiere in the STRAWINKSI SWINGT programme.
Last erscheint. Oder wie eine anatomische Anomalie. Bedeutung, noch wichtiger,
Raumwahrnemung fluktuiren ständig.
.....Wie in Yeats` "The Second Coming": Turning and turning
in the widening gyre/ The falcon cannot hear the falconer;/ Things fall
part; the center cannot hold....
Die Apokalypse mag nah sein, Rochas Stück endet mit lyrischer Naivität.
Eine Tänzerin hüpft duch einen Schauer von Rosenblütenblättern, den Blick
gen Firmament. Ein Echovon Chaplins Tramp, der gegen alle Wahrscheinlichkeit
in einer barbarischen Welt überlebt. Nur durch sein Lächeln. Wie flüchtig auch immer.
ballettanz, Machael Kroes
„The Brazilian choreographer Gisela Rocha has-luckily - not felt encumbered by the
historical significance and in her „Pictures on Stravinsky“has taken a fresh and fruity
approach to a number of composition (including the neo-classical, Bach-inspired Dumbarton
Oaks). With a loose reference to the themes from stavinskys`s musical realization of
the „Rite of Spring“, Rocha presents a sort of life cycle in a number associative
parts. From a chair-based dance in which space needs to be determined both literally
and figuratively, to a ménage à trois involving a woman and two men who, displaying
and courting, moving around each other in a superbly inventive manner.
Rocha`s eclectic approach, from balletesque pirouttes to a lot of stick-to-me moves
from contact improvisation, is powered chiefly by intuition. In her previous work I
found Rocha’s imaginative universe, glued together by associations, to be unattractively
vague. But now the focus on Stravinsky acts as a particle accelerator: Rochas`s
expressive powered is released in a huge explosion. The finale, a catwalk procession of
parading dancers, can be seen as a contemporary call for individuality and unpredictability.“

...nicely capricious.....Rocha`s movement idiom fits the music seamlessly, and the
costume by the Arnhem designer Sebastian Kramer, equally stylish and crazy (bathing
caps!), lso suit this idiom wonderfully. The subtle lighting plan- the illuminated chairs
are lovely-and the spatial design complete the pictures.

The high point is a moving trio .

With Pictures on Stravinsky, Introdans has added a truly top-class work to its repertoire.
